Over the past few years among the number of books I like to read are non-fiction/related to crimes and the criminal world. One particular author of such writings would be Ann Rule.
I remember reading regarding the statement when one is swore in during court:
Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" that statement it dated back to early English Common Law.
There were no penalties for perjury until the 1600s'.
Now get this, prior to that time, it was believed that the fear of God's wrath was enough to keep witnesses honest.
Today....such thought can make one laugh. "The fear of."
