Veterans Day is this week...
Just some thoughts:
Bedford, Virginia is today a town located in Bedford County and as of 2010 had a population of 6,622. Location wise it would be consider part of the greater Lynchburg, VA area.
In my opinion there is something special about that town. For you see Bedford lost more residents per capita in the Normandy June 6th, 1944 landings than any other community in the United States. Nineteen soldiers from Bedford whose population at that time was 3,200 were killed on D-Day. Three other Bedford solider's died later in the Normandy campaign.
A book I would strongly recommend for one's reading is The Bedford Boys by Alex Kershaw. I found it a book that was hard to put down for the evening.
The Bedford Boys--Alex Kershaw
To me as I read the closing of the book here was the sad line for me:
"Soon no one will be left to tell what itwas like to be on Omaha Beach."
You think the telling of history is not important to its people?
