It happened on January 1st, 1968 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas,Texas. I was fortunate enough to see the game on television. I never will forget the scene. Texas A&M under coach Gene Stallings had just defeated Alabama 20-16 and thus beat his old college coach and mentor, Paul "Bear" Bryant.
Coaches normally meet at the middle of the field at the game's ending to congratulate and shake hands. As Stallings and Bryant approached one another Bryant turned, putting his back to Stallings and said, "Get on." With that Bryant carried piggy back his one time player and former assistant coach off the field. It is said that is the happiest anyone in Alabama had ever seen the Bear after a loss.
You know there are a few times in life that one, as the scriptures say, "Rejoice with those that rejoice."
