I TALKED TO AN OLD GIRLFRIEND
This past week I met and talked with an old girlfriend.
Before your mind goes in too many directions, no, it was not an old girlfriend of mine.
When I asked her about a certain relationship, immediately a smile came to her lips. “How did you know about that?” she asked. She paused before speaking as if she wanted to be very careful choosing her words. Turning her head slightly, a sparkle came to her eyes. She touched my arm gently, “Oh my, yes, we definitely were boyfriend and girlfriend.”
They had met during their high school years like so many others of us did. “It was a special relationship we had; it was a special time in my life, both our lives really” she said. She went on to talk about how they met, things they did. Pausing again, “I loved him, I really did. He loved me, plain and simple.” Then her voice broke a little, and I could see emotion coming to her; she put her hand over her chest, “I’m sorry, sorry for my emotions, but he was special, and it was a special time and relationship. I’m sorry.” Giving her a moment, I said, “No apologies needed for special people, special times, special relationships, and special memories; apologies are never needed. Most all of us have been there one time or another. We’ve had that special someone, and that special relationship.”
As I got in my car later that afternoon, I slipped in a cd of her old boyfriend. As I drove along I thought of tears evoked from special times and special memories from the past, apologies never needed.
Again, no apologies are needed when thinking, talking, and remembering special people and times from the past. We all have them.
Though summer turns to winter
And the present disappears
The laughter we were glad to share
Will echo through the years
When other nights and other days
May find us gone our separate ways
We will have these moments to remember
