It was Saturday afternoon and I just wanted to take a drive.
Sometimes I just like to take a drive and kinda go back to seeing life as it once appeared say like in the 1950's or early '60s'. So I drove one of my old cars ('65 Corvette) with the top down out in the country, west Williamson County to a small place called Leipers Fork. I walked in this combination, gas station, grocery store, restaurant and whatever else you might want to call it. They call it Puckett's Grocery Store.
I noticed a band had set up on a make shift stage at the front of the store. I went to the back of the store and got myself a Diet Dr.Pepper. You help yourself and get it from a cooler. I then made my way to a collection of tables and chairs. None of the tables and chairs matched. I think they must have gotten them over the years at various yard sales. As I said nothing matched.
As I approached a table to sit down I ask the young man fronting the band, "You guys know any old country?" The young man, probably late twenties said, "Hey that's about all we know." "Good, then I'm stayin." And I did, stayed for all three sets. Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I don't think they played anything much past 1960.
As I said the young man could not have been past thirty years old. After the first set they took a break and he came and sat down at my table. I learned that he was originally from Chicago and had been in the area about four years. "You got a day job," I ask. "Oh, yeah, I gotta eat," he said. "How's a kid like you from of all places Chicago know about Wynn Stewart or Ernest Tubb." I ask.
Anyway they played good music and all they were playing for was themselves and hopefully folks would put a little money in the tip jar they had sitting on a chair next to the steel guitar player. As they finished their last set I walked by the stand and spoke with each one of them. I shook Adam's hand, the young man who was fronting the band. "When do you play here a again," I ask. "Two weeks from today."
I told them "I'll be back, you can count on it."
